The Dark Tower is a series of eight books by Stephen King that tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World's last gunslinger, and his quest to reach the titular tower.
King began writing The Gunslinger in 1967, initially plotting out a story where Roland meets people on his journey who help or hinder him before he finally reaches the Tower. In 1982, he attempted to finish the novel but stopped at around 140 pages due to lack of progress. He would later reuse elements from this aborted first attempt when writing The Waste Lands in 1991.
Work on what would become Book VII slowed down until 2003 when King wrote an outline for the entire series and started drafting again. After some effort, he completed it in 2004 and sent it off to be published as seven individual volumes (the final volume consisting of three parts).
